If we sign Song?
Ok the guy has failed his first medical and offered a 2nd medical in a weeks time.
I am surprised much will change between medicals but then again depends on why he failed the first.

I am surprised that an investment in a midfielder, an area where we seem to have worked our attention and one who is injured is high on the clubs agenda.
Song really seemed to coast at the end of the season, and wasn't really a turning games for us. Also coupled with the fact he is injured does question the Sullivan attitude towards Austin.

If we do sign Song (and it is an IF), then it is message that seems to spark confusion. Ok Song is a free transfer, but will cost in wages and likely to be more than Austin. Strikers are what we need now and midfielders offer nothing more to the club now unless they can score.

Think the club needs to seriously look at the areas it needs to build and promote strength.

Right Back, why is this not being pursued. Striker, linked with every little known striker and those who definitely won't come.
I remember the message was a striker with Prem experience. Yet we still wait and our chairman chooses to denounce a player who is currently playing because of an injury concern.

Yet we may sign Song who is injured. Confused?

I thought you didn't rate Barton in that position?

Because we have plenty of cover for that position.

An obvious thing to say, but It's a very unfortunate situation to be signing somebody who is injured. On a massive deal. I sympathise with the club - there's a bit of 'damned if you do, damned if you don't' about it.

Barton would clearly be a much safer option. But I wouldn't want to have to make that call.

Just my opinion, but I don't believe we will BUY any striker, let alone pay £15m for Austin.

Re: If we sign Song?
Probably because it is quite an opportune moment to sign a quality player, who is normally out of our reach. And for a relatively good deal.

There is no option of whether to sign Song, or not, in my opinion its a no-brainer.

I think Bilic wants to play a pressing game high up the pitch but didn't inherit enough pace or bite in midfield, or mobile enough defenders who are comfortable on the ball.

I think the width thing is a bit of a misnomer as we will use width further up the pitch in a fluid midfield that has more posession.

All we need is some pace around the likes of Payet and Song and we will create chances.

Why does Andy Carroll play in the Championship now then?

Re: If we sign Song?
Well he is playing against Rotherham, while Carroll is injured.
Why didn't you use Sakho as an example of an injury prone non scoring forward by the way? Who is playing in the premiership at the moment?

Thames Ironworks 5:14 Mon Aug 24
Re: If we sign Song?
Oh and Austin has 4 goals in 4 games so far, injury prone or not that is better than Carroll.

Re: If we sign Song?
The crux of the thread is more in relation to signing of an injured player.

Whatever the difference between Austin and Song, would we want to expend money on Song which may limit us in buying Austin or even another quality striker?

i-Ron 5:05 Mon Aug 24
Re: If we sign Song?
So Song, even if he was on a free, is cheaper than Austin's asking price alone, and that's before agents fees and wages...

Re: If we sign Song?
3 years Song isn't it?

Austin will clearly want wages a £15m demands.

Exactly.
Song 90k a week 4 years. Even if he was on a free, which I don't believe, but the poster does....how is that going to be more expensive than....Austin £15million cash to QPR plus similar wages?!!??!

That's clearly £12-15 million more?

Re: If we sign Song?
Might have a lot to do with Song's quality

Played for 2 of the top 8 clubs in the world , wants to come back to London but Chelsea and Arsenal don't want him

So leaves us , lucky for once were signing a quality player still in he's prime

Re: If we sign Song?
I agree with Darby though.

It seems we have a proliferation of a certain type of midfielder, but a complete absence of another type, which is a worry.

El Scorchio 3:57 Mon Aug 24
Re: If we sign Song?
I think another striker being signed or not likely has no bearing on what happens with Song.

What we ideally need is a someone who plays wide but also can play as a striker and won't mind playing wide when Carroll and Sakho are both available.

Darby_ 3:57 Mon Aug 24
Re: If we sign Song?
What I'm wondering is whether we really need so many defensive midfielders when we have so few wide players.

Will there be a plan B if the narrow formation doesn't work?

whufcroe 3:52 Mon Aug 24
Re: If we sign Song?
"but will cost in wages and likely to be more than Austin"

So Song is going to be on £90+k a week and Austin will pay for free then?
